Opinion: Meet the three Toms making Delaware a better place

All three of them are from Delaware. All three of them are beacons of sharing and caring. They epitomize ordinary people doing extraordinary things.

They are all Toms, and although they may not even know each other, they are comrades in service to those in need.

I met the first Tom, Rev. Tom Davis, slightly over six years ago. He was part of a river of kind and concerned men and women who flowed into Delaware’s first and the only gurdwara (Sikh house of worship) at the time, Sikh Center of Delaware, for a candlelight vigil in the aftermath of the gurdwara shooting in Oak Creek, Wisconsin.

In that terrible incident of hate, six Sikhs were fatally shot during a service by 40-year-old Wade Michael Page in September 2012. Candlelight is an apt metaphor for Tom’s work.

A Vietnam veteran and retired Presbyterian pastor, Tom expressed an interest in learning more about Sikhism. More than that, I think, he was interested in exploring ways to help the local Sikh community heal.

It is no wonder he has been a commissioned interfaith peacemaker in New Castle Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church for many years.

Tom is an avid photographer, writer and musician. His insatiable curiosity extends to learning and using the latest software tools and applications as a way to keep his mind sharp, and he is always happy to help others who don’t find the rising sea of technology friendly and welcoming.

However, Tom’s special service is reflected in his dedication to helping our veterans.

More than 20 veterans take their own lives every day. Most of us, despite our dismay, sadly sigh and then move on to deal with our own day-to-day problems.

But not Tom.

He has been investing all his skills — as a writer, researcher, poet, filmmaker, photographer, man of cloth, singer, instrument player, peace lover, yogi and fundraiser — to this consuming cause. He is focused on creating awareness about the deep and deadly role of the “moral injury” that Tom says is a main factor in the high rate of veterans’ suicides.

In a proactive effort, he established the nonprofit Interfaith Veterans Workshop (IVW) to help veterans connect with each other and various faith communities. Though not a veteran myself, I was also invited to be a part of the IVW, perhaps to strengthen its interfaith participation.

The group is currently working on creating a “Veterans Peace Video Project” under Tom’s leadership. It features quite a menu of activities to constructively engage the state’s veterans, ranging from hiking and writing to meditation and yoga.

Tom Clark leads an interfaith initiative that is focused on service. He has a great company of men and women to help him in the cause. They label their humanitarian work under the acronym GWACS — God Wants All Children Serving.

I am part of the group that does service every fourth Saturday in Wilmington at the intersection of Front and Lombard. We gather to serve the needy and homeless with everything from baked goods and hot food to many other everyday need items such as toothbrushes, lip balm, hand lotion or clothing. Hats, gloves, socks and jackets have been very much in demand recently.

Tom Clark is a different kind of a leader. He is unassuming and doesn’t talk or smile much. He loves to work with other people but hates meetings.

In fact, the only meeting the group may have ever had was at Vaqar Sharief’s house a few years back.

“We decided from the word go to conduct no meetings, no bureaucracy, no paperwork, no bells and whistles, just focus on the service,” Tom had said at that meeting. The group follows it like a court order.

The only thing that happens away from the physical serving venue is a monthly after-service email communication from Tom that updates the number of servings, gives appreciation for the work done, and provides an update on continuing and new needs.

When I didn’t see Tom in our last December serving, I asked Vaqar, “No Tom?” I learned that he was caring for his ill wife. No wonder the normal connection and cheer was missing during the January service.

Tom’s spirit and strength are reflected in a line from the prayer he uses at the end of each monthly email: “We know what we are doing and what we are doing is not enough; Please help us do more.”

The third Tom’s email starts with mrfizzix. Why? Maybe he loves to state his love for physics, humorously!

I knew Tom from his emails in the Newark interfaith group, but we met in person only last December at the “Christmas for All” serving for homeless in Calvary Baptist.

He is a retired physics school teacher who is trying to defeat and diminish the “centrifugal” forces scattering the lives and families of the homeless and disadvantaged in our area. He is the “centripetal” part of many of Newark Empowerment Center’s activities aimed at helping the area’s needy.

NEC works in cooperation with Friendship House with a motto and philosophy of, “A Hand Up, Not a Hand Out.”

Tom’s commitment to service and betterment of others can be judged from his admission, “I pray a dangerous prayer that God will use me to bring joy to others.”

In today’s world where dictators, disruptors and kleptocrats are on rise, “The Three Toms” are uncommon men who share a common name. In this whirlpool of chaos where hate and violence are gaining new currency, what these three do seems blessed and beautiful.

Indian IT Folks in US Need to Reinvent Themselves to Stay Relevant

It was in the dark room of our home in Punjab’s Daroli Khurd village where I was midwifed into this world.

I grew up hearing the light-bearing tales and fables of Punjab’s haloed warriors, freedom fighters and sportsmen. We had started living in Patiala by the time our farmers too had sort of joined the ‘celebrity league’ for ushering in the green revolution.

However, the common thread running through these legends showed itself to me only after I reached Lancashire, England. I was there in the mid-1990s to pursue a master’s degree in business, after completing my undergraduate degree in computer science, which was followed by a couple of years of work in Dilli.

In England, I met legions of Punjabis (Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims) who had arrived in their much cherished Vilayat in the 1950s and 60s to work in the cotton mills—once the pride of Britain. The majority of them now faced the challenge of finding a job. The resulting crisis of financial distress and low self-esteem was proving to be a fertile ground for sprouting the social and addiction problems I saw in abundance.

Except for the urban post-millennials (Generation Z)—maybe—who in Punjab doesn’t remember the glowing aura these Vilayatis carried in the land not too long ago? Their presence in the village, street or neighborhood was synonymous with Mauja hi Mauja!

 

America’s Newest Guests

But when their career and economic situation became tough in the meman-di-land, they, in actual fact, had nothing more than their tall and handsome physiques, and physical bravery to offer—the same attributes that had catapulted the heroes of the light-bearing, myth-like stories.

Undoubtedly and unfortunately, it was not only in the time of Tennyson, but even then, that the old order was yielding its place to the new. These physical talents were no longer an asset for them to earn an honourable living and a dignified life.

What began as a trickle soon became a creek, and then a river. These newly arrived ‘e-pilgrims’ in America were IT—overwhelmingly software—workers.

 

Of Limo Pick-Ups & Easy H1B Visas

While Punjabis remained busy finding reliable Aagants and arranging large sums of money somehow (illegally) to place foot in Amrika, American companies were busy convincing software techs in Bangalore and Hyderabad why they should join them and not their competitors.

Limousines were sent to pick them up from the airports. Hotel stays were arranged and provided for, for the first two weeks or more, as temporary living quarters. Other needs were catered to as well including classes in American English and cultural familiarity.

I know that what you read nowadays about H1B’s is far different from this glorious account. Yes, that is so over, and so much more over now than when the dot-com obsession was around. It started to fade in 2000. Then it simply disappeared after the 9/11 tragedy. Nevertheless, for the IT industry and the Indians, in hindsight, it was just a cyclical trough. They were back in demand as the US economy began to reboot after several months of downtime.

 

How H1B Troubles Began in US

The internet became ubiquitous. The entrepreneurs and visionaries in the US kept working to create applications, packages, products and platforms around the internet that changed how entities interact, communicate and transact business.

It was my second job after returning from England. The first one was in Bangalore. Over two decades, I have done thousands of H1Bs and green cards and know a thing or two about them. First, all the problems are not just because of Trump (although I only feel happy when he is blamed for them).

The Trump regime is happily implementing further changes through memos and interim regulations.

 

The Need for More ‘Jugaad’

Individuals still carry the worker mindset. Brought up in India on an overdose of the “silence is golden” principle, they are struggling to add value in the current agile environment, where communication and punctuality carry premiums.

Notwithstanding their claims to the contrary, the much-respected and admired Indian software companies are still largely “body shopping boutiques”. I say “largely” only out of my love for them.

I have nothing against their hunger to create land banks for robust share value, but they should have shown the same jugaadbaji (innovation) in creating products, applications, platforms, and a culture of creativity and innovation.

Nonetheless, I wholeheartedly lend my voice to their 2020 resolution: Trump Bin, Acche Din!

Why Thanksgiving Has Special Significance for Sikhs in America.

It was the morning of the Thursday (15 November) before — one full week before Turkey Day, an informal way we here in America refer to Thanksgiving. It was snowing outside. Delaware National Guard’s 36th Annual Prayer Breakfast was that same morning, and I was among the invited.

Like a pucca Indian, when I reached the venue, Cavaliers Country Club, others were about to finish eating. I was courteously led to my designated table after I showed the reception staff my driver’s license to help them out of the struggle with my name.

My friends, (Rev.) Tom Davis and Jack Sanders, got up to give me a hug. Among the others at the same table was Chaplain (Lt Col) Andy Werner, who I later learnt had started this wonderful tradition. He had paid for my breakfast, too. I blessed him even more for that.

In the large hall were men and women in uniform and, of course, the chaplains, most of them in uniform as well, making me wonder if their divine approach was any different from their civilian counterparts.

Driving back, I wondered about the various ways Americans celebrate Thanksgiving. Some start with a great breakfast followed by an evening feast of turkey, cranberry sauce and green bean casserole.

In India and most other countries, such joyous feasting and festivity is reserved for religious events. But this great American festival is for everyone, including those who have no faith or don’t believe in Rab-ji! (God).

Here, we have had our own tradition since 1992. People of different religions in our area come together at an inter-faith Thanksgiving prayer. Clergy members (I am an exception) of different faiths and denominations speak at the event. More than two hundred people attend year after year.

I have been associated with this great tradition from several years. It started when I first attended one of the group’s monthly meetings as a representative of the local Sikh community.

Members of the group have joined me in the last two inter-faith peace walks as part of the Delaware Sikh Awareness and Appreciation Month. The Delaware Sikh Awareness Coalition (DSAC) — which I founded and chair — organised the DSAAM resolutions as well as the peace walks in April of 2017 and 2018.

The DSAC also has received tremendous help and support from Rev Cynthia Robinson (my dear “sister”) of the New Ark United Church of Christ. She even knows a couple of Hindi words, learned from her aunt who was a missionary in India — including Batala in Punjab — for several years. One of them is shabash,which Cynthia not only uses appropriately but wonderfully.

Last year, when I shared with fellow speakers and the audience why Thanksgiving has this special connection for me, I was mobbed at the end by people to further explain to them the grand idiom of positivity and prosperity — Sarbat Da Bhala!

I told them that every Sikh prayer I had ever heard or read ended with Sarbat Da Bhala, regardless of the occasion, day or time. However, I considered it a religious formality without real life application.

Then I came to America and experienced Thanksgiving. That’s when the bulb in my mind lit up and I understood, for the first time, that the spirit of Sarbat Da Bhalaalso has practical applications in real life. The native Americans didn’t help the pilgrims because they spoke the same language or had the same colour or because their religions were the same.

And they certainly did not support the same cricket team, nor did their wives belong to the same kitty group. I am sure their kids didn’t go to the same high school, I told them. For me it was simply a living example of Sarbat Da Bhala! It was the embodiment of the divine saying.

And so, I am sure my “sister” Cynthia will not mind when I borrow her word to say, “Shabash Thanksgiving!”

Voices: Pittsburgh synagogue shooting gave me a familiar sinking feeling

It was the Saturday after — the first Shabbat service in the aftermath of the Pittsburgh tragedy was about to begin.

Sunmeet Singh Sethi and I entered the local synagogue here in Newark, Delaware. Rabbi Jacob Lieberman, a short, handsome man wearing a kippah, like many others in the congregation, stepped off the dais to welcome us.

After returning to the lectern, the rabbi’s hands rose repeatedly to clean his cheeks. Then he left.

I noticed other congregants turning their necks to look at us with grace and kindness. He reentered after a couple of minutes and looked at us and others. He was still crying.

Growing up in Punjab and studying and working in India, America to me, and those around me, was a mecca of creative and constructive activities — a land of opportunities. No wonder, then, that an army havaldar’s son could dare think of starting a software company immediately after landing here in 1999.

That company, Tekstrom, will celebrate its 20th birthday next May.

Even the sky wasn’t the limit in America, or so we all believed. Americans had literally proven it by landing on the moon a year before I was born.

The assembly line, harnessing the atom, developing the computer and creating the cyber age — America had revolutionized the world on many fronts.

For someone who dreamed of coming to this country, and worked hard to make it happen, it has been especially painful to witness the hatred expressed by a tiny, but lethal, group of individuals in this country.

Six years ago, it struck a gurdwara in Oak Creek. Recently, a synagogue in Pittsburgh. In between, a black church in Charleston.

All three tragedies were perpetrated by lone white supremacists; all three at places of God; all three at an interval of three years.

In each case, the perpetrators’ numbers rose: six victims the first time; nine the second; and 11 in Pittsburgh. And, then there were the additional tragedies in schools across the country, the concert in Las Vegas, the nightclub in Florida, among others.

Sunmeet and I were at Temple Beth El to express our love and solidarity with the Jewish community. We were there to share their unspeakable grief that resulted from the unconscionable desecration that occurred the preceding Saturday.

The sinking feeling I had after hearing about the Oak Creek shooting is still fresh with me. I was in Bangalore that day visiting my India operations with my wife and two children. Renu and I were worried especially about our son. He was then, and even today, the lone Sikh boy with long hair to ever attend his private school in its century-old history.

Every Saturday he has a private lesson with his violin teacher at her house, a place my family knows well from the many Passover dinners we’ve enjoyed there. That day I dropped my son off for his Saturday lesson and went to the gym.

It was there, on the wall-mounted TV-screens, that I learned of the tragic Pittsburgh shooting. It triggered that familiar sinking feeling once again. I thought of my Jewish friends and their pain and anguish.

The next day I joined hundreds of others gathered at a vigil on the steps of Memorial Hall at the University of Delaware in Newark. We had assembled to express our solid rejection of the anti-Semitic hatred that infected the shooter who wanted to “kill all Jews.”

Addressing the gathering, which included representatives of many faiths, Rabbi Lieberman had this to say: “For our grief, this is an opportunity to mourn. For our outrage, it’s a time to cry out. For our fear, an opportunity to pray and to invite courage, and for our vulnerability, it’s a time to stand with others and to discover that we are not really alone.”

Others spoke as well. “Today, we are not Catholic, Protestant, Buddhist, Muslim [or] Hindu,” U.S. Senator Tom Carper said. “Today, we are all Jewish.”

Delaware Congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester, Gov. John Carney and many others who spoke mentioned virtually all religions except Sikhism. It was only U.S. Senator Chris Coons who reminded the crowd of the shooting at the gurdwara in Wisconsin.

I’m sure the officials’ omission was not intentional; we are a tiny demographic in America compared to other religions, but passing Sikh Awareness Month resolutions (April) in the Delaware legislature that I started in 2017 must go on for many more years, I resolved.

When Sunmeet and I walked to the parking lot that Saturday after the Shabbat service, a woman stopped her car near us. She was in tears. She blew kisses at us while saying, “Thank you for coming!” Sunmeet later told me that two of her loved ones were among the eleven victims in Pittsburgh.

A reminder of how far we all need to go to expand our understanding came when a couple of Sikhs questioned me for going to the Shabbat service, just as many Sikhs and others ask me every year why I host Iftar dinner during Ramadan. Others question my celebrating Christmas, Diwali, Lohri, Holi, Passover and other festivals.

“Why not?” I reply.

“You are a Sikh.”

“Precisely. I only feel Sikh when I am doing this because my Nanak’s blessing of ‘Sarbat Da Bhala’ hugs me warmly and blissfully only during such moments.”
