Delaware Governor John Carney has signed an executive proclamation naming April 2019 as the ‘Delaware Sikh Awareness and Appreciation Month’; in recognition of the contribution of the small but influential Sikh community in the economic and social milieu of the state. This is the third straight year Delaware is observing the Sikh awareness month.
They are all fingers. But different. In look, size, ability, strength, and position. But the hand they belong to is One. Since they know it, they live and work together: Harmoniously. Peacefully. Lovingly!
We all are those fingers. April 6th, let us come together to become the Hand!
On March 27, 2018 HCR 67 proclaimed April 2018, “Sikh Awareness and Appreciation Month” in Delaware. Our big thanks to our dear friends Representative Paul Baumbach who first introduced the resolution in the House and Senator Bryan Townsend who later introduced it in the Senate. It was unanimously passed in both the chambers.
In 2018 Vaisakhi, the grand day for Sikhs worldwide, is on Saturday, April 14. Like fragrance and flower are inseparable, good and great things also hold hands. April 14 is also “National Reach as High as You Can Day”.
To celebrate them both, a lot of “snowflakes” will converge at Old College entrance on Main Street at 10 AM. Each participant will be given material to make a snowflake. Those who want to know how Sikhs wrap their turbans will have an opportunity to watch that. Also, you will have choice to wear one for a few minutes if you like. After that we will start walking nice and slow and our walk will end in the Newark United Church of Christ. There, together, we will make a snowman using the same material we had used for making snowflakes.
Delaware state proclaimed April 2017 as “Sikh Awareness and Appreciation Month” in a joint resolution. Both the chambers passed SCR-3 unanimously. First the Senate and then the House.
It became necessary to educate our fellow citizens that 99% of those you see with turbans are Sikhs, the followers of Sikhism, an independent, monotheistic faith. It is not a branch or blend of any other religion or religions. A path toward universal upliftment.
The highlight of the event, “Sikh Awareness and Appreciation Month,” April 2017, proclamation by both chambers of Delaware legislature yesterday was when Jasmine Kaur Minhas got a standing ovation from Delaware’s Senate.
